About
Hi! My name is Amy Cassell, and I am passionate about helping clients recognize their strengths, build coping skills, and work through life’s challenges with greater confidence, resilience, and hope. I have been in the mental health field since 2014.
Originally from Nashville, TN, I moved to VA in 2018. I obtained my bachelor's degree in Psychology from Belmont University in Nashville, TN, and I acquired my master's degree in clinical counseling from Palo Alto University in Palo Alto, CA. I enjoy watching true crime shows and movies, in general. I also love reading, hiking, listening to music, singing, learning to play the guitar, and my true respite is spending time on most any beach.
I have been an outpatient therapist and crisis counselor since 2018, but I have worked in the mental health field in other capacities since 2014. As my 2 older siblings and I navigated through the emotional twists and turns after our parents' divorce, I became more aware of how family dynamics profoundly influence one's mental health journey. As I matured, I recognized the commonality of ACES (Adverse Childhood Events) in the U.S., and I became passionate about helping individuals recognize their attributes, resilience, and ability to process and begin to heal from loss and trauma. I treat clients with depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, PTSD, OCD, and grief as a result of various losses.
I love working with children, teens, and adults who are in crisis or dealing with daily stress, anxiety, or depression. My therapy is personalized to meet each client where they are at and help them find meaningful change. I use evidence-based approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and solution-focused therapy.
What should a new client know about working with you?
Every client’s journey is unique, so I tailor my approach to meet your individual needs and goals. I begin by taking the time to get to know you—your story, your strengths, and the challenges you're facing. Together, we'll identify what's most important to you and create a plan that feels meaningful and achievable.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
The first session involves getting to know the client and addressing the most critical symptoms and reasons for seeking therapy. I'll work with you to help build practical coping skills, recognize your strengths, and develop the confidence and resilience to navigate life's challenges. My goal is to provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered to make lasting, positive changes.
I look forward to working with you!
