Special Olympics North Carolina (S.O.N.C.), based in Morrisville, is dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to realize their full potential through sports and physical activity. Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968, S.O.N.C. has since grown to be one of the largest Special Olympics programs in the world, with nearly 40,000 athletes participating each year. With the mission to celebrate the courage, joy, and determination of those with intellectual disabilities, S.O.N.C. continues to provide sports training, competition, and health screenings to its athletes in order to create a unified and inclusive society.
