Greetings! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Corey McSweeney. I am from Brooklyn, New York, but I currently live upstate. I am Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 8 years of professional work experience. I currently work in private practice after previously working at a county mental health clinic. My time there was challenging but incredibly rewarding! Working for a community clinic offers many unique experiences that helped me grow as both a professional and as a person. I have considerable experience in helping clients with the following: – Generalized Stress/Anxiety – Social Anxiety – Depression – Panic Disorder – Anger Management – Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) – Conflict Resolution – Self-Harm – Suicidal Thoughts/Behavior – Motivation – Self Esteem/Confidence – Relationship Issues – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – Bipolar Disorder – Phobias – Behavioral Addiction – Grief – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – Borderline Personality Disorder In addition to the issues identified above, I hold a certication as an International Gaming Disorder Counselor (IGDC). Although a relatively new diagnosis, video gaming disorders have become prevalent with both children and adults. It would be a great disservice if I attempted to help you without having the relevant experience, knowledge and training required. My approach to treatment is simple. First and foremost, I believe that having a rapport between us is the most important factor in the therapy process! Without it, there is a higher likelihood of distrust, poor communication, and misunderstanding. Therapy can be a very difficult and uncomfortable experience for some. My ultimate goal is to make your time with me as comfortable, productive, rewarding, and even as fun as possible! To gain the most from the therapy process, it’s helpful if you are honest about your commitments to self-examination, understanding, and our relationship. This includes any concerns you may have regarding services or with me. I want to serve you well and appreciate any feedback you may have that will help me to do so. With that being said, I believe it is vital that you know a bit about me before possibly working together. My therapy style is structured, but also very flexible and relaxed. I want you to speak openly and without fear. For example, if you like to curse, then curse away! This is therapy, not a purity contest! The more you feel comfortable expressing yourself, the greater the chance that you’ll be more willing to share. Because in therapy, when you’re afraid to say something, it is often the case that it needs to be said. While some therapists avoid self-disclosure and personal experience, I find it incredible valuable when used appropriately. We are all people and if there is a chance to connect on that level then I believe it is worth it. I try my best to be an open book, but only when I think it adds value to the therapy process. The Bottom line: You are the expert of your story! My role in this journey is to guide you and use my knowledge and expertise to help you achieve your goals. Always remember this: progress is not a straight line. There will be ups and downs, twists and turns, and detours along the way. You may, at times, feel like you are failing. However, the way I see it, if you are trying you are never failing. I very much look forward to working together!
