Founded in 1952 by Dr. Gertrude A. Barber and a group of dedicated parents, the organization has been working to improve the quality of life for those in the greater Erie area facing challenges. They offer information, resources, technical assistance, and advocacy on issues including early intervention, special education, inclusion, transition to adulthood, employment, housing, transportation, health care, Medicaid waivers, and government benefits. The Arc of Erie County also works with state and federal legislators on issues that impact children and adults with disabilities and their families. Their mission is to provide support and services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, promoting respect, dignity, equality, safety, and security for all. They believe in community, diversity, self-determination, and self-advocacy, and strive to empower individuals with disabilities to take control of their lives and make informed decisions about their care and services.
