Summit Assistance Dogs is a nonprofit organization, located in Anacortes, Washington, that provides highly-skilled mobility, hearing and therapy dogs for people with disabilities. Founded in 2000 in response to the overwhelming need for more trained dogs, Summit’s goal is to ensure that every person with a disability has access to a canine helpmate. As part of this mission, Summit also works with young people, providing special educational programs that involve them in the training of our dogs. Through the Tales for Tails reading program, challenged students read to our dogs, which helps to increase their motivation to learn and gives them a non-judgmental listening partner. These programs benefit both students and our dogs, as the canines learn appropriate social skills and basic obedience.
