Special Olympics Illinois (SOILL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing sports training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities in all 102 counties of the state. It is organized into 11 geographic Regions, with each having its own team to implement SOILL programming at the local level. Special Olympics Region I Decatur provides programming for people in Champaign, Christian, Clark, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Effingham, Jasper, Logan, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby and Vermilion counties. Athletes compete at their Region Qualifier and those earning a gold medal may advance to the next level of competition which in most cases is the State Championships. The Region Team consists of a Region Director who oversees all aspects of region programming and other team members who are responsible for sports programming, fundraising, outreach, communication, and education initiatives.
