The New York Institute for Special Education (NYISE) is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonsectarian educational facility that provides quality programs for children who are blind or visually disabled, emotionally and learning disabled, and preschoolers who are developmentally delayed. Founded in 1831, NYISE offers a range of programs, including the Readiness Program for children ages 3 to 5, the Schermerhorn Program for students with blindness and visual impairments, and the Residential Program, which provides a home-like atmosphere for students. The institute's programs emphasize independence, social skills, and life skills training, and offer a variety of special services, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and counseling. NYISE serves students from the Bronx and surrounding areas, and works closely with families to develop individualized education plans and provide support and resources for students and families.

Services & specialties
Readiness Program
A full-day, center-based program for children ages 3 to 5 who reside in the Bronx and display adaptive developmental delays, cognitive, speech, and/or language delays, fine and/or gross motor skill delays, sensory integration delays, social-emotional development delays, or visual impairments/blindness.
Schermerhorn Program
A program that offers diverse educational services to meet the needs of children who are legally blind, from the ages of 5 to 21, and emphasizes independence, social skills, and life skills training.
Residential Program
A program that provides a home-like atmosphere for students, offering help with homework, practice skills related to independent living, and opportunities for recreation and socialization.
