Founded in 1975 in Houston by people with disabilities, the Coalition was built on the belief that independence is a right and that individuals with disabilities should lead the movement for equal opportunity. Through its comprehensive independent living services, peer support, benefits counseling, and systems advocacy, the Coalition empowers people with disabilities to live independently, access critical resources, and fully participate in their communities. With a strong legacy of advocacy and impact, the Coalition continues to build on five decades of service and advocacy, making independence possible for generations to come. The Houston Center for Independent Living serves as the first point of contact for individuals seeking support, providing information and referral, peer support, independent living skills training, individual and systems advocacy, and youth transition services. The Coalition's work has a lasting impact on the community, strengthening relationships and creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to thrive.
