Founded in 1972, CIL is the first independent living center in the country. They offer a wide range of services, including assistive technology, travel training, core services, diversion and transitions, emergency preparedness, residential access, youth programs, and systems change advocacy. Their services are available to people with disabilities and their families in Northern Alameda County, including Berkeley, Oakland, Alameda, Emeryville, Piedmont, and Albany. The Center for Independent Living has offices in Berkeley and Oakland, and they require masks to be worn at all times in their offices. They also have a no-scent policy and limit the capacity to 15 people. Appointments and walk-ins are on a first-come, first-served basis.
