Appalachian Independence Center is a non-profit, non-residential Center for Independent Living that provides essential community services and advocates for people with disabilities in Southwest Virginia. They were founded in 1988 by a group of local citizens with a desire to make services available to people with disabilities and help them learn about community services specific to their needs. Appalachian Independence Center offers five core services, including Peer Counseling, Information & Referral, Independent Living Skills Training, Advocacy, and Transition, as well as additional services identified by the needs of their consumers. They serve the counties of Washington, Smyth, Wythe, Bland, Grayson, and Carroll, as well as the cities of Bristol and Galax, VA.
