At AFA Academy Therapy and Learning Centers, we understand the unique challenges faced by children and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Founded in 2008, ACTION FOR AUTISM/AFA ACADEMY is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization based in St. Louis, Missouri, with two main functions: 1) The AFA Academy Therapy Learning Centers, providing services to children ages 18 months to 21 years, and 2) Action for Autism, offering financial assistance to families of those with ASD in the St. Louis and surrounding areas. Our mission is to provide comprehensive, family-focused support and resources to children and families affected by ASD.

Online Therapy vs In-Person Therapy

Not sure whether to see a therapist in person or online? This comparison highlights why online therapy is often the more flexible and accessible option.

Thinking about online sessions instead? See online therapy options
Aspect In-Person Therapy Online Therapy (often more flexible)
Convenience & Time ✖️ Requires travel, scheduling time off, and a fixed location. ✔️ No travel; join from home, office, or car when it suits you.
Scheduling Flexibility ✖️ Mostly office hours; fewer last-minute or out-of-hours options. ✔️ Early morning, evening, and lunchtime sessions are easier to find.
Comfort & Privacy ✖️ Waiting rooms, chance of meeting someone you know, commuting when feeling low. ✔️ Talk from your safest private space at home or elsewhere; no waiting room.
Therapist Availability ✖️ Limited to providers within driving distance and local specialties. ✔️ Access a much wider pool of therapists, including niche expertise.
Cost & Extra Time ✖️ Parking, travel expenses, and extra commuting time around each session. ✔️ No travel or parking costs; time is spent on the session, not the journey.
Accessibility ✖️ Harder for rural areas, busy parents, chronic illness or mobility issues. ✔️ Accessible from anywhere with internet; ideal for busy or remote lifestyles.
Consistency ✖️ Travel, moving, or bad weather can interrupt or cancel sessions. ✔️ Continue therapy even while travelling or during bad weather days.
Best For ✖️ Situations where physical presence or hands-on support is essential. ✔️ Most stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues and life transitions.
Limitations ✖️ Less flexible; easier to miss sessions due to travel or schedule conflicts. ✔️ Requires internet and a private space; not suitable for emergency situations.

Bottom line: For most people, online therapy offers the best mix of convenience, comfort, and therapist choice—while still providing high-quality support.

Is online therapy actually effective?
Research shows that for many issues—such as anxiety, depression, stress and relationship difficulties—online therapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions. What often matters most is finding a therapist you connect with and staying consistent over time.

When is online therapy a better fit than in-person?
Online therapy is ideal if you:
  • have a busy or changing schedule,
  • live far from providers or have limited transport,
  • prefer the privacy and comfort of your own space,
  • travel frequently or split time between locations.
For many people, this flexibility is what makes it possible to actually stay in therapy.
Explore flexible online therapy options →
Is online therapy private and secure?
Reputable online therapy platforms use encrypted connections and secure apps that are designed for confidential healthcare communication. Sessions are held in a private space of your choosing, which can feel safer than a public waiting room.
See trusted online therapy platforms →
How do costs compare with in-person therapy?
Online therapy can sometimes be more affordable overall: there are no travel costs, less time away from work or family, and many platforms offer predictable weekly pricing. The value often comes from being able to attend regularly without extra friction.

Have questions?

If you’re wondering if your child needs speech therapy, AFA Academy Therapy and Learning Centers in Ballwin can help. We offer comprehensive early intervention programs for autistic children, which typically include speech therapy. Your child can learn effective ways to communicate, helping them become more independent and confident. Speech therapy focuses on communication skills such as responding to questions, starting or ending conversations, changing conversation topics, and understanding body language. It’s important to start speech therapy as early as possible to take advantage of the critical period for language development. If your child is very quiet, says few words, or does not speak at all, it might be an indication that speech therapy is needed. At AFA Academy Therapy and Learning Centers, we understand the importance of speech therapy and can guide you through the process. Visit our website to learn more about our speech therapy services and how we can help your child.
At AFA Academy Therapy and Learning Centers in Ballwin, we believe that speech therapy can offer many benefits for children and adults alike. Speech therapy can help with non-verbal communication, forming clearer speech, understanding and responding to questions, discerning facial expressions and emotions, understanding body language, and improving feeding and swallowing. Our experienced speech therapists can help your child or loved one learn to communicate more effectively, while reducing any stuttering they may experience. Our goal is to provide comprehensive speech therapy services that help our clients better express themselves and build their confidence in any environment.
At AFA Academy Therapy and Learning Centers in Ballwin, we specialize in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, a therapy rooted in the science of learning and behavior. Through ABA therapy, we help children and adults improve their communication skills, social skills, and daily living skills while also addressing problematic or challenging behaviors. Our ultimate goal is to teach helpful skills that promote independence and reduce harmful behaviors. Learn more about ABA therapy and how we can help you or your loved one reach their goals with our comprehensive guide.
At AFA Academy Therapy and Learning Centers in Ballwin, we understand how difficult it can be to decide if Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is the right choice for your child. Our approach is to provide effective ABA therapy that seeks to improve communication skills, introduce productive habits, and reduce harmful behaviors without trying to change who your child is. We strive to assist your child in learning all that they can so that they can live to their potential and embrace their unique personality traits. For more information on ABA therapy, check out our comprehensive guide for starting and ending ABA therapy.
At AFA Academy Therapy and Learning Centers|Ballwin, we understand the complexities of paying for ABA therapy and the importance of understanding what is covered by insurance. ABA is usually covered by insurance if your child has an autism diagnosis, as this is the only diagnosis insurance will authorize for ABA services. To make sure your child’s plan covers ABA services, please check with your insurance provider to confirm that ABA is included and that the provider you are seeking care from is in-network. To learn more about ABA therapy, take a look at our comprehensive guide on everything you need to know.
