At New Perceptions, we understand that it can be difficult to know when your child needs speech therapy. It’s important to understand that speech therapy is often recommended for autistic children, as many people with autism have difficulty with social communication. Even if your child is very verbal, they may need help with communication skills like responding to questions, starting or ending conversations, changing conversation topics, or understanding body language. Early intervention is key, as there is a critical period in the brain for language development. Speech therapy can help your child become more independent and confident individuals. If you’re concerned that your child may need therapy, watch out for signs such as being very quiet, saying only a few words, or not speaking at all. Our complete guide explores everything you need to know about speech therapy.
