Easterseals of the Birmingham Area is one of the twelve rehabilitation facilities owned and operated by The Alabama Easterseal Society (Alabama Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Inc.). Founded in 1950, it began as a co-sponsored teacher visiting homes of severely handicapped individuals to teach crafts. This eventually grew into Alacrafts, a workshop providing vocational rehabilitation services to disabled individuals in the Birmingham area, which opened in 1952. In 1964, Spain Rehabilitation Facility was constructed which focused primarily on physical medicine, rehabilitation research, and education. Additionally, Spain was designed to provide post-physical restoration and vocational rehabilitation services to those in need.
