Camp Burnt Gin is a summer camp for children, teens and young adults with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses. It’s a program within South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) Division of Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs. Founded in 1945 by Emily Cate, a physical therapist with the Board of Health (now DHEC), Camp Burnt Gin has been dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for children with special health care needs by providing a camp experience designed to improve self-esteem, independence and the skills necessary to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Mill Creek and Camp Burnt Gin were initially two separate camps, but they merged in the late 1970s with Burnt Gin becoming the primary site due to its accessibility. Over the years, the program has expanded and now serves children, teens and young adults with a variety of special health care needs. For 75 years, Camp Burnt Gin has been making a difference in the lives of its campers, their families and summer staff.
